Embeth Jean Davidtz is a dual citizen of the United States of America and South Africa. She was born on August 11, 1965. Films including Army of Darkness, Schindler’s List, Matilda, Mansfield Park, Bicentennial Man, Fallen, Junebug, and Fracture include her as an actress, and she has also appeared in the television programs Mad Men, Californication, In Treatment, and Ray Donovan. Davidtz was born to South African parents John and Jean in Lafayette, Indiana, in the United States, when her father was attending Purdue University to get a degree in chemical engineering. After thereafter, the family relocated to Trenton, New Jersey, and then again, when Davidtz was nine years old, they went to South Africa.
Davidtz’s genealogy may be traced back to the Dutch, the English, and the French. Prior to beginning her studies in South Africa, she was required to become fluent in Afrikaans since her father had accepted a teaching position at Potchefstroom University. Davidtz graduated from The Glen High School in Pretoria in 1983 and studied at Rhodes University in Grahamstown. When she was only 21 years old, Davidtz made her debut on stage as Juliet in a stage performance of Romeo and Juliet at the Maynardville Open-Air Theatre in Cape Town. The play was Romeo and Juliet, and it was put on by CAPAB, which is now known as Artscape. Performing in both English and Afrikaans, she has appeared in other local plays, such as Stille Nag and A Chain of Voices, all of which earned her nominations for the South African Tony Award, which is the award that is most comparable to the American Tony Award.
In 1988, she made her debut in the film industry with a little part in the American horror movie Mutator, which was shot in South Africa. Not long after that, she was cast as the daughter of a mixed-race couple in the South African short telemovie A Private Life. The role was a more significant one for her. For her performance in the drama Houd-den-bek in 1990, Davidtz was recognized with the DALRO Award for Best Supporting Actress.
She was considered for the Esther Roos Award in the category of Best Actress in a Supporting Role in an Afrikaans Film in 1991 for her performance in the same play. Her performance in the South African film Nag van die Negentiende in 1992 caught the attention of director Steven Spielberg, who later gave her the part of Helen Hirsch in the film Schindler’s List. In 1991, Davidtz performed the character of Sheila in Sam Raimi’s “Army of Darkness” with Bruce Campbell as Ash Williams. It is now considered a cult classic and is the third installment in the Evil Dead film series.
In 1993, Davidtz portrayed the character of Helen Hirsch in Steven Spielberg’s Schindler’s List. In the year 1995, Davidtz was cast in pivotal roles in the movies Murder in the First and Feast of July, both of which were produced by Merchant Ivory Productions. She was cast in the role of Miss Honey, Matilda’s first-grade teacher, in the 1996 film adaptation of the book of the same name. On June 22, 2002, Davidtz tied the knot with Hollywood attorney Jason Sloane, and the couple now has two children together. Los Angeles is where the family makes their home. Davidtz has a younger sister who graduated from Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, in April of 2023 and began working as a psychologist there.
In an interview in 2016 about her guest appearances on Ray Donovan, in which she represented a breast-cancer survivor, Davidtz disclosed that she had been diagnosed with breast cancer in 2013, which had prompted her to cease working and for which she had undergone a mastectomy. The discussion was about her appearances on Ray Donovan, in which she portrayed a breast-cancer survivor. When she was informed that the role required nudity, Davidtz worked with producer David Hollander to incorporate her partially-reconstructed right breast into the story.
She declined the use of a prosthetic as a substitute for her right nipple which was due to be restored through surgery. The role was Davidtz’s first after undergoing treatment, and when she was informed that it required nudity, Davidtz worked with producer David Hollander. “Someone might have a hard time believing it if an actress pretended to have their nipple removed and then said, ‘Look, I’m still sexual and pretty.'” But when it does come to pass, I want that it will make someone else feel lovely. In response to a question on the meaning behind her decision to take on the role, Davidtz said, “I still feel beautiful.”
In the mystery film Fallen, which was released in 1998, Davidtz portrayed a theologian who assisted Denzel Washington in solving a supernatural wave of killings. The same year, she also appeared as a femme fatale connected to Kenneth Branagh in Robert Altman’s The Gingerbread Man. The year after that, Davidtz portrayed a lady of the world in the 19th century in Patricia Rozema’s remake of the Jane Austen comedy Mansfield Park, and she also had a dual part opposite Robin Williams in the future fable Bicentennial Man. Both of these roles were in the same year.
In the film Bridget Jones’ Diary, which was released in 2001, Davidtz played the part of Natasha, a coworker who was also one of the love interests of the character Mark Darcy, who was played by Colin Firth. In the same year, she made her debut on the CBS drama Citizen Baines, in which she played the daughter of an unsuccessful candidate for the United States Senate (played by James Cromwell), who herself is considering a job in politics. Other roles include playing opposite Tony Shalhoub in the horror movie Thirteen Ghosts, which was released in 2001. She had a role in the drama directed by Michael Hoffman in the year 2002 titled The Emperor’s Club.
Her role in the 2005 film Junebug was that of an unconventional art dealer from Chicago who traveled to North Carolina to finally meet her husband’s relatives for the first time. As Dr. Derek Shepherd’s sister Nancy in the third season episode of Grey’s Anatomy titled “Let the Angels Commit,” Davidtz has also appeared as a guest star on the ABC drama series Grey’s Anatomy. In 2008, she appeared in the HBO series In Treatment as a recurring character named Amy. Alongside Josh Charles’ character, Jake, she was a member of a troubled relationship.
In the drama from 2007, “Fracture,” she played the role of the unfaithful and tragic wife of the character played by Anthony Hopkins. She portrayed the role of Rebecca Pryce, Lane Pryce’s wife, in the television drama Mad Men, which aired on AMC from 2009 to 2012. On the Showtime series Californication, she also portrayed the role of Felicia Koons, the mother of Becca’s closest friend Chelsea as well as the wife of the school’s dean. In the English language adaptation of “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” released in 2011, Davidtz portrayed the role of Annika Blomkvist. She also had a cameo appearance in the Spider-Man reboot The Amazing Spider-Man, released in 2012, playing the role of Mary Parker, Peter Parker’s absent mother.
