After working for the FST for two years and traveling throughout the deep South, Nicholas moved to New York City and joined the Negro Ensemble Company, where he participated in all of the productions during the first season of that theater ensemble.

Nicholas was scouted from the St. Mark’s Playhouse in New York, where he had been performing, the role of Liz McIntyre, the Guidance Counselor, on the ABC sitcom Room 222. After settling down in Southern California for a while, Nicholas eventually attended the University of Southern California and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Drama from the University of Southern California’s Theater Program in 1987. In 1968, Nicholas made her debut on television in an episode of the show It Takes a Thief, which marked the beginning of her career.

For her performance as Liz McIntyre on the ABC comedy-drama series Room 222, which ran from 1970 to 1972, Nicholas was nominated for the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Drama TV Series each of the three years in a row (1970–1972). After starring in the television series Room 222 from 1969 to 1974, she went on to win two Image Awards in 1976 for her performance as Beth Foster in the 1975 film Let’s Do It Again. She was deemed the most outstanding actress in both a motion picture and a drama series for her work. Nicholas left the University of Michigan when she was 19 years old and joined the Free Southern Theater in New Orleans. The Free Southern Theater was led by Gilbert Moses, whom she would later marry in May 1964 at the American Theater in New York and later divorced in 1967.

Bill Withers, a soul singer, and songwriter, became Nicholas’s husband on January 17, 1973. Their connection had been tumultuous in the years leading up to their wedding. Nicholas reported to the authorities in November 1972 that Withers had flown to Tucson, Arizona, where she was filming The Soul of Nigger Charley, and had assaulted her in a motel room after she had threatened to quit their relationship; however, she did not pursue criminal charges in relation to the incident. In April of 1974, she submitted the petition for divorce, and in December of that same year, the divorce was finalized.

Michele Burgen, the younger sister of Nicholas Burgen, was a 26-year-old editor for Ebony magazine when she was murdered in February of 1980. At LaGuardia Airport in New York City, the body of the woman was discovered inside a rented car that was locked. Nicholas and her older brother Otto looked all throughout the country for hints, but no one was ever brought to justice for the crime.

Nicholas was still coming to terms with the death of her sister in June 1980 when she attended a poetry reading in Sacramento and met Jim Hill, an anchor for CBS Sports. The couple tied the knot on Valentine’s Day in the year 1981. In October of 1981, the couple decided to end their relationship and she filed for divorce; however, they reconciled not long after. In 1984, Nicholas submitted another petition for divorce. 1987 was the year that saw the divorce become final.
