David Lodge was born on January 28, 1935. David considers it a great honor to be involved in such a wide variety of acting projects in 2018–19, in a field that has never lacked exceptional performers. As always, David is the chameleon actor, disappearing into his roles as the main protagonist in Final Fantasy, Yarrow the Lead Freelancer in Anthem, Magnus the Russian Baby in Boss Baby! on Netflix, and others.
David frequently lends his voice to multiple characters in the same animated or video game production; in fact, he voices all four main Pirate and Ghost characters in the upcoming Battle Wake Arcade Game. In the animated sequel Son of Big Foot 2, for instance, David lends his voice to not one but two pivotal main characters. And if you tune in to Disney Junior’s Goldie and Bear, you might not be able to place David among the familiar voices.
In the previous year and a half, David has lent his voice to 32 video games and 10 animations, most of which are currently protected by non-disclosure agreements. Disney, Cartoon Network, Dreamworks, Warner Brothers, Activision, Nickelodeon, Electronic Arts, BioWare, and many more are just a few examples of the well-known sources and creators included.
His narration voice work is dramatic and memorable, and you can hear examples of it in movie and video game trailers. His narration of the Fall of Freemark in Anthem is powerful and moving, and it is accompanied by breathtaking visuals.
In Creed: The Virtual Reality Experience, David got the honor of voicing Sly Stallone. He was Rocky Balboa in the film. The voice-over in the game’s trailer has David as Rocky/Sly, and the resemblance is striking. Obviously, no one suspected that David was impersonating Mr. Stallone. Therefore, David can also do voice dubbing and voice matching.
In 2018, David demonstrated his continued excellence as a commercial voice actor by lending his voice to a variety of memorable characters, including an AVO in nationwide Toyota commercials, a Guru for McDonald’s radio marketing, and a Yeti in an animated Jack in the Box spot. David’s voice was featured in a half dozen 2018 campaign ads.
The 2004 release of David Lodge’s Author, Author marked a departure from Lodge’s previous works, particularly in terms of the genre to which they belonged. Although the word “novel” appears on the cover, it is difficult to classify this book as either historical fiction or biography.
Lodge opens and finishes the book with a frame story about James’s final months before his death in February 1916.
James’s midlife, from the 1880s through the 1890s, is the primary focus of this analytic narrative. During this time, James attempted to break into the theatre industry with the flop Guy Domville, while his friend George Du Maurier, an illustrator for Punch, was enjoying widespread acclaim for his comic strip Trilby. If Lodge is trying out a new hybrid form in Author, Author, it would seem to be part of a larger trend in contemporary British literature that favors the biographical novel as part of a wider mixed genre.
Lodge appears to be affiliated with this movement. Lodge notes in his essay collection The Year of Henry James that Colm Tóibn’s The Master and Emma Tennant’s Felony, both of which focus on James’s middle years, debuted within a few months of the publication of Lodge’s novel.
The book opens with a lengthy essay that discusses Lodge’s novel Author, Author, and its history of creation and reception. The novel by Lodge bears the title Author, Author.
David Lodge is a professor at Cambridge and a visiting professor at UCL. He is also an Honorary Fellow at UCL. Emeritus Professor of English Literature at the University of Birmingham, he taught there from 1960 until 1987, when he left to focus on writing full-time.
He has written extensively on literary criticism and theory, with a particular emphasis on the English and American novel, and he is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature. In 1989, he presided over the judging panel for the Booker Prize for Fiction. His collection of short pieces, The Art of Fiction, was first published in the British newspaper The Independent on Sunday.
