Daryl Joseph Mitchell is a New Zealand cricketer who was born on May 20, 1991. He is a member of the New Zealand national team and represents Canterbury in domestic cricket. Mitchell plays all forms of the game for the New Zealand national team. Born in New Zealand, he is the son of John Mitchell, a former player and coach in the sport of rugby union. Mitchell eventually made his debut on the international stage in 2019, after having participated in more than 200 matches inside the local cricket system of New Zealand.
Mitchell has acquired a reputation for being able to play any position that is handed to him at the international level. He is noted for his versatility and has gone on to solidify this reputation. It was notably notable for his ability to finish games, which contributed to his reputation as a bankable finisher. He did not disappoint in this regard. Before his late debut in international cricket, he went on to become one of the most influential players in Super Smash. He was also famous for being the man who hit the most sixes in Super Smash.
His namesake, Daryl Mitchell, is also a right-handed batting all-rounder who hails from England and has mostly enjoyed playing for Worcestershire at the county level. As a result, fans and English cricket analysts sometimes get him confused with Daryl Mitchell. At the time of his arrival at Northern Districts in 2012, he was twenty years old and was still in the process of earning his bachelor’s degree in exercise and sports science at that point.
He is said to have spent five of his formative years in Perth, which is located in Australia. It is also said that he played cricket with some of the most famous Australian cricketers, including Andrew Tye, Marcus Harris, and Marcus Stoinis, particularly while he was in the school and grade ranks in Western Australia. When Scarborough won its first-grade championship in March 2009, Daryl Mitchell, Marcus Stoinis, and Justin Langer were all sitting together as teammates in the changerooms at the WACA. They were enjoying their accomplishment.
Mitchell played for the Western Australia Under 19s, Under 23s, and the Australian Centre of Excellence throughout his three years with Hale in school cricket and two years with Scarborough in club cricket. Additionally, Mitchell participated in a Futures League Twenty20 tournament while playing for the Australian Centre of Excellence. He obtained a contract from Northern Districts, which he eagerly accepted, and since then he has been a regular on the New Zealand domestic circuit. This came about as a result of his remarkable performance in tournaments held at the third-grade level in Australia.
In 2006, while he was a teenager, he and his family relocated to Western Australia. This was because his father, John, acquired the role of head coach of the Western Force rugby union team. It was announced in January 2019 that he would be a part of the Twenty20 International (T20I) squad that New Zealand would be using for their series against India. On February 6, 2019, he made his debut for New Zealand in a Twenty20 International match against India.
The addition of his name to New Zealand’s Test team for the second test match against England took place in November of 2019. In the match against England that took place on November 29, 2019, he made his debut for New Zealand in cricket.
Mitchell achieved his maiden century in Test cricket in January 2021, while he was playing Pakistan in the second test match. He ran 102 runs without being out of the game. Mitchell received a spot in the One Day International (ODI) team that New Zealand will use for their series against Bangladesh in March of 2021.
On March 20, 2021, he played her first one-day international for New Zealand, which was against Bangladesh. During the third match of the series against Bangladesh, which took place on March 26, 2021, Mitchell achieved his first century in one-day international basketball. Even though it was a position he had never held previously, he ended up opening the batting with Martin Guptill for the rest of the 2021 ICC Men’s Twenty20 World Cup.
Before the 2021 ICC Twenty20 World Cup, he had participated in 116 Twenty20 matches, however, he had never started the batting in any of those matches. At the time, Gary Stead was serving as the head coach of the Twenty20 World Cup, and he allowed him to begin the innings during the 2021 tournament. During the time leading up to the Twenty20 World Cup in 2021, the coaching staff and administration of New Zealand wanted to assign Mitchell, along with Jimmy Neesham, the primary responsibility of completing the middle order.
Nevertheless, the plans had to be altered later on as a result of the late arrival of first-choice opener Tim Seifert. Seifert joined the bio-secure bubble pity late because he was involved with the Kolkata Knight Riders franchise during the 2021 Indian Premier League. As a consequence of this, Daryl Mitchell ended up becoming an accidental opener for New Zealand cricket.
Mitchell maintained a highly successful test tour to England in July 2022. During the three-match test series, he amassed a record 538 runs and a stellar average of 107.60. Even though New Zealand ended the test tour on the receiving end, they were defeated by the home team by a score of 3–0. Mitchell’s performance was a mammoth runfest.
Mitchell was one of the only two bright sparks for the Kiwis during the one-sided test series. Alongside Tom Blundell, Mitchell scored three centuries in three consecutive test matches, surpassing Martin Donnelly’s total of 462 runs to become the most prolific New Zealand player to have ever scored the most runs in a single test series on English soil against England. Mitchell broke the record for the most runs scored in a single test series against England.
