Dann Florek Bio

Ezekial Dann Florek is a well-known American actor and film director. He was born on May 1, 1950, in the United States. He is best recognized for his roles as New York City Police Captain Donald Cragen on NBC’s Law & Order and its offshoot Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, as well as Dave Meyer on L.A. Law (1988–1993). His appearances on these shows garnered him the most attention.

Ezekial Dann Florek is the son of Leonard Florek, a chiropractor, and Darlene Florek. He was born in Flat Rock, Michigan, and his father’s name is Leonard Florek. He went to Eastern Michigan University and majored in mathematics and physics there, but he never ended up finishing his degree. He relocated to New York City with the intention of pursuing a career as an actor in the local theater.

Florek established himself as a reliable supporting actor in the 1980s by appearing in a wide variety of films, including Sweet Liberty, Moon Over Parador, and Angel Heart. Additionally, in the live-action film adaptation of The Flintstones, he had the role of Mr. Slate. Beginning in 1988, Florek appeared on NBC’s smash drama L.A. Law in the role of Dave Meyer, the husband of Susan Ruttan’s character, Roxanne Melman.

He portrayed the role for a total of 22 episodes. In addition to that, Florek starred in multiple episodes of Roseanne and was a recurring character on the WB sitcom Smart Guy, playing the role of the high school gym coach. Law & Order is a police procedural and legal drama television series that has been broadcast on NBC since 1990. Florek has been a co-star on the show since 1990, playing the role of Captain Don Cragen.

Following the conclusion of the 1992–1993 season, NBC informed Law & Order’s founder and executive producer, Dick Wolf, that the network was going to terminate the low-rated show if he did not add a few female cast members to the all-male cast. The first few years of Law & Order had ratings that were below average, and this led to NBC’s decision.[

Wolf reluctantly consented and fired Florek, as well as Richard Brooks, who played Paul Robinette. He then hired S. Epatha Merkerson and Jill Hennessy, respectively, to assume the roles that Brooks had previously portrayed. Despite this, Florek was given the opportunity to helm a few episodes of Law & Order in the years 1994 and 1995. Florek played the role of Cragen once again in the episode “Bad Faith” from 1995, which he also directed, and in the TV movie Exiled from 1998, which concentrated on the character of former L&O actor Chris Noth playing the role of Mike Logan.

In 1999, he reprised his role as Cragen, but this time it was on the Law & Order spin-off series Law & Order: Special Victims Team, in which he played the captain of the eponymous team. After being written out of the show during its 15th season, Florek’s farewell episode aired on January 15, 2014, marking the end of his time on the show. In May 2015, he appeared once more in his role in the 21st episode of the 16th season. In the episode that marked the 500th episode of SVU, he had a video call with Olivia Benson, who is the current captain of the unit.

In addition, he played the part of Cragen once again in an episode of the spin-off series Law & Order: Organized Crime, which aired in April 2022 and brought Cragen back together with his old detective Elliot Stabler. After that, he made an appearance in the series finale of the second season. Both Florek and his wife, Karen, make their home in the Venice neighborhood of Los Angeles. Karen is an artist and she has a job. Dave, his brother, is also in the acting business. Eastern Michigan University was each of their training grounds.

During the winter commencement ceremony at Eastern Michigan University on December 13, 2008, and December 14, 2008, respectively, Florek was presented with an honorary Bachelor of Arts degree as well as an honorary Doctorate of Arts degree. Both degrees were awarded in Florek’s name. At the event, Florek spoke as the featured keynote speaker. However, a scholarship in the theatrical department altered the course of his life, and he left college before completing his degree.

After completing his education at Juilliard, he began his stage career in the late 1970s and early 1980s, performing in a wide variety of plays, including both classic and contemporary works, such as “Love’s Labour’s Lost,” “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” and “The Philanderer.” He also appeared in “Saints,” “Bicycle Boys,” “Dark Ages,” “One Tiger to a Hill,” “The Freak,” “Winterset,” “Strange Snow,” ” Dave Florek, the younger brother, is also a working actor.

In the 1980s, Dann made another significant shift, this time to Los Angeles, where he performed on stage at the La Jolla Playhouse and Globe Theatre in productions such as “Big River” and “The Three Cuckolds” while still looking for work in film and television. He later became known for his portrayal of down-to-earth, practical bureaucrats in television crime dramas, which he described as his “working class” specialty. “Hill Street Blues,” “The Equalizer,” “Matlock,” “21 Jump Street,” “Beverly Hills Buntz,” and “Almost Grown” are some of the series that have been credited to the actor.

Dann also had a reoccurring part on the television show L.A. Law (1986), playing the character of the husband of secretary Roxanne, who was played by series regular Susan Ruttan. In addition, he established himself as a reliable supporting actor and a recognizable face in a number of films, including Eddie Macon’s Run (1983), Sweet Liberty (1986), Angel Heart (1987), Sunset (1988), and Moon Over Parador (1988), among others. Later in his career, Florek would become known for his role as Captain Cragen on the long-running police procedural television show Law & Order (1990).

His appearance on the spin-off series Law & Order: Special Victims Unit (1999) marked his return to the role he had previously played. Over the course of his career, he had the supervisory function for a total of twenty-five years. During this lengthy stint, he found time to participate in a few other programs, including a regular position on the short-lived baseball comedy Hardball (1994) and as a zany Abraham Lincoln in the irreverent comedy The Secret Diary of Desmond Pfeiffer (1998).

Both of these roles were performed after he left his role on the long-running show. In addition to that, he was given a recurring role as a coach on the 1997 television show Smart Guy. His most recent work includes the stage pieces “The Front Page” (Broadway revival, 2016) and “The Joy Wheel” (2019), as well as the films “Hard Rain” (1998), “Beautiful Joe” (2000), and “Santorini Blue” (2013). He has been keeping a low profile ever since he retired his television persona.
