Cormac McCarthy Bio

Although Charles McCarthy was born in 1933. He decided to go by Cormac, after the legendary monarch of Ireland. When he was 4 years old, he and his family relocated to Knoxville, Tennessee. After spending four years at the University of Tennessee, he enlisted in the Air Force. Upon leaving the Air Force, he attended college again, where he met and later married Lee Holleman. A son, Cullen, was born to them. McCarthy did not pursue higher education and instead followed his family to Chicago, where he found work as a car mechanic.

Once they got back to Tennessee, the marriage began to fall apart. He met his future wife, Anne DeLisle, an English singer and dancer, while on a fellowship in Ireland. They wed that same year, 1966. Some of his early writing had already been published, and he was beginning to have modest success. After their time in Europe, they returned to Tennessee and eventually split up in 1976, with McCarthy relocating to El Paso. Blood Meridian was McCarthy’s first major triumph, and All the Pretty Horses, the first book in the Border Trilogy, is what made him a household name. Since then, he’s authored a remarkable series of novels that are all must-reads and are on par with or better than anything else being written in the US now.

His father, Charles Joseph McCarthy, joined the legal team of the Tennessee Valley Authority and the family relocated to Knoxville, Tennessee, in l937. Cormac, the third of six children, graduated from Catholic High School in Knoxville in l951 before enrolling at the University of Tennessee to study liberal arts. He enlisted in the USAF in l953 and served for four years, including time in Alaska. He tied the knot with Lee Holleman and the two started a family.

After the breakup between Cormac and Lee, he wed Anne de Lisle, with whom he had no children, and eventually divorced. He wed Jennifer Winkler for the third time in 1999 and is said to be settling down with her and their child in El Paso, Texas. McCarthy has been honored with several writing prizes, including as the National Book Award in 1992 for All the Pretty Horses and other grants and fellowships from the Rockefeller, Guggenheim, MacArthur, and Faulkner foundations, among others.

The Cormac McCarthy Society at the University of Texas in El Paso funds papers for literary conferences and hosts events where McCarthy’s work is read and debated, despite McCarthy’s reputation for shunning the spotlight. You may learn more about the group by visiting their website at www.cormacmccarthy.com. Academic interest in McCarthy has increased during the past decade, thanks in large part to the success of All the Pretty Horses, which garnered him both critical acclaim and widespread readership.

Short pieces like “A Drowning Incident” and “Wake for Susan” marked the beginning of his creative career once he enrolled back at the University of Tennessee in 1957. They both had work included in “THE PHOENIX,” the student literary journal. C. J. McCarthy Jr. was his former given name. In 1959 and 1960, while he was still a student, he took home the Ingram-Merrill Award for creative writing. He tied the knot with college student Lee Holleman there. McCarthy dropped out of college before receiving his degree and moved to Chicago, where he worked as a mechanic and began penning his debut novel. After returning to Tennessee, he found that his marriage had hit a tough patch and was no longer viable, so he and his wife divorced. He was the sole parent to a single boy. Desire’s Door was one of the books written by his wife.

The American Academy of Arts and Letters awarded him a grant to travel back in the early 1960s. He spent the money to the land of his ancestors in Ireland, where he met Anne De Lisle, an English singer, and dancer whom he later married in England in 1966.

In 1965, he released his debut novel, The Orchard Keeper, which went on to be nominated for a Faulkner Award. The Rockefeller Foundation awarded him a grant in 1966. After traveling around Europe with Anne, he finally settled on the island of Ibiza to begin writing his second book. McCarthy’s family relocated to the nation’s capital in 1967 so that his father could take a position as the firm’s principal attorney. Outer Dark, his second novel, came out a year later. The next year, in 1969, he was honored with a Guggenheim Fellowship.

Cormac grew up in a Roman Catholic household. After graduating from Knoxville’s Catholic High School in 1950, he enrolled in the University of Tennessee in 1951 and 1952. His academic focus is on the liberal arts. McCarthy enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in 1953 and served for four years, with two of those spent in Alaska where he had a radio show.

McCarthy went back to school in 1957 and ’59, writing under the pen name C. J. McCarthy, Jr. for publication in The Phoenix, the student literary magazine. His stories “A Drowning Incident” and “Wake for Susan” were both published. In 1959 and 1960, he received the university’s Ingram-Merrill Award for creative writing.

McCarthy was awarded a grant to travel the world by the American Academy of Arts and Letters before the publication of his debut novel, The Orchard Keeper. With this money in hand, he boarded the liner Sylvania in 1965 bound for Ireland. He met Anne DeLisle, a young English singer, and dancer who was working on the ship, and they eventually tied the knot in 1966 back in England. In 1966, McCarthy received a grant from the Rockefeller Foundation. During their travels, he and Anne visited several countries. Then they moved to Ibiza, which at the time was a haven for creative types. McCarthy finished editing Outer Dark there.

McCarthy wrote the script for The Gardener’s Son, a PBS program that debuted in January 1977. The events depicted in this script also occurred in real life but in the state of South Carolina. Ecco Press published a rewritten version of the screenplay afterward.
