Damini Ebunoluwa Ogulu was born on July 2, 1991, in Ahaoda, Rivers State, Nigeria. Benson Idonije, his grandfather, managed Fela Kuti. At the tender age of ten, Burna Boy began his musical career. He made songs with the help of his classmates’ copies of FuityLoops. Burna Boy used to play in a band back when he was in high school. He attempted to further his study in London, but he abandoned his studies to pursue music instead.
Burna Boy’s mother saw his enthusiasm for music and helped him land an internship at a local radio station. Burnaboy regularly spent his time away from the office in the studio, where he worked on new music. If the studio’s power ever went out, Burnaboy could always rely on the generator he kept in the trunk of his automobile.
After releasing the smash hit “Like to Party” off his debut album L.I.F.E. in 2012, Burna Boy shot to fame in the music world. The album L.I.F.E. had a first-day sale of 40,000 copies. Uba Pacific purchased the rights to market the product for 10 million Naira. The album was produced by Leriq. The album features guest appearances from artists such as 2face, M.I., Reminisce, Wizkid, Timaya, and Olamide, all of whom Burnaboy was able to get.
King Sunny Ade and Bob Marley’s music bears striking resemblances to those of Fela Kuti. L.I.F.E. was praised by music critics. It also peaked at #7 on that year’s Billboard Reggae Albums chart. After parting ways with Aristokrat Recordings in 2014, Burna Boy launched Spaceship Entertainment the following year.
On November 25, 2015, Burnaboy dropped On a Spaceship, his second studio album. Later, on January 26, 2018, Burnaboy dropped Outside, his third studio album. According to Burna Boy, Outside is a mixtape since it features a variety of genres, including Afro-beats, dancehall, reggae, and road rap.
In February 2018, the album peaked at #3 on Billboard’s Reggae Albums chart. Steel & Copper is a four-track EP by Burna Boy, out on March 21, 2019, and including contributions from the electronic duo DJDS out of Los Angeles. Burna Boy, like many other Nigerian musicians, acts as an ambassador for several companies. Globacom, Nigerian Breweries Plc, and Mortell Cognac all signed Burnaboy as their brand ambassadors.
Burna Boy, who emerged in the early 2010s and is now one of Nigeria’s fastest-rising talents, is known for fusing dancehall, reggae, Afrobeat, and pop. His breakthrough came with the LeriQ-produced single “Like to Party” in 2012, which opened the door for his full-length debut, L.I.F.E. Over the next five years, Burna worked with everyone from J Hus and Skales to Fall Out Boy and Lilly Allen, releasing two more albums and collaborating with a wide range of musicians. Outside, his 2018 album, earned the Nigeria Entertainment Award for Album of the Year and peaked at #3 on the Billboard Reggae chart, significantly increasing his international profile. Both African Giant (2019) and Twice as Tall were critically lauded and charted in multiple countries. His sixth studio album, Love, Damini, was released in 2022, the same year he made history by becoming the first Nigerian to headline a gig at Madison Square Garden.
At age 10, a friend from school gave him a copy of the music creation program FruityLoops, and he began composing and recording songs. He used these tools to start making his own music on an outdated PC. Following high school, he decided to pursue higher education in London, but after two years he returned home to Nigeria. Ogulu, then 19 years old, visited the southern coast of Nigeria in 2010 to record with producer LeriQ, a mutual acquaintance.
After spending his formative years listening to American artists like DMX, this was a turning point during which he began to identify with the music of his homeland. He listened to dancehall and reggae, like his dad, and Afro-beat, like his grandfather, and learned about both. Ogulu fused together several musical styles as a result of his newfound influences.
Burna Boy’s breakout single, “Like to Party,” was produced by LeriQ and featured work from the artist himself. His first studio album, L.I.F.E, was released in 2013, and it received positive reviews from music critics because of the participation of guest artists including Wizkid, Timaya, 2face, and M.I. On his 2015 follow-up, On a Spaceship, Burna further expanded his musical palette by breaking away from his record label and LeriQ. With his 2017 track “Rock Your Body,” he collaborated with producer Juls. The rest of the year was filled with a string of hits that included “GBA,” “Streets of Africa,” “Koni Baje,” and “Sekkle Down,” all of which featured J Hus. Burna released Outside, his third studio album, toward the end of January 2018, following the release of “Heaven’s Gate,” a single that featured contributions from Lily Allen.
After a year, he released the Zlatan-assisted “Killin Dem” single. It was later included on his fourth studio album, African Giant, among other singles including “Dangote” and “On the Low,” and its release date was July 2019. At the 62nd Annual Grammy Awards, the album was nominated for Best World Music Album. Burna released his third studio album, Twice as Tall, in August 2020. It peaked at #54 on the Billboard 200 and performed significantly better in Europe and Canada.
It ended up taking home the trophy for Best World Music Album at the Grammys. Youssou N’Dour, Naughty by Nature, Chris Martin of Coldplay, and others also made cameos on the album. In 2021, he released the collaborative track “Rotate” with Becky G, as well as the solo effort “Kilometre.” In April 2022, Burna became the first Nigerian musician to headline a show at Madison Square Garden, the iconic New York venue. On his 31st birthday, July 2, he released his sixth studio album, Love, Damini, which featured the Toni Braxton sampled hit single “Last Last.”
