Brian Turner Bio

Visalia, California is the place of Brian Turner’s birth. He attended the University of Oregon and graduated with a master’s degree in poetry. After that, he enlisted in the US Army and spent the next seven years there. He served in Bosnia and Herzegovina with the 10th Mountain Division in 1999 and 2000. He commanded an army unit in Iraq in 2004 while they were based in the Mosul area. The Iraq War inspired his first book of poetry, Here, Bullet. The first book by Turner also did very well. Aside from the Poets’ Prize, it also won the Beatrice Hawley Award in 2005, the Northern California Book Award in poetry in 2006, and the California Book Award overall in 2007.

Turner is well-known for his accounts of the Iraq War and is a veteran of the United States Army. Among his many accolades is a Guggenheim Fellowship, as well as grants from the Lannan Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts. He lives in Orlando, Florida, and oversees the Master of Fine Arts program at Sierra Nevada College.

Only the mountains know where they came from and where they are going and what will happen when we are gone, and it is his life’s work to establish that emphasis is, to sever all intrusive pretension or platitude and render directly and with respect the independent reality of the things that matter to him.

These are frequently the hills, winds, clouds, and rivers of New Zealand’s rural interior, which he knows better than perhaps any other New Zealand poet. His ‘nature poetry’ is therefore a synthesis of the poet’s upbringing, life experiences, and literature, and is of the best kind that works as directly as the sun and the rain.

Underneath the poems’ surface wit, no-nonsense honesty, rigorous clarity of sense, and sinewy rhythmic energy lie the craft of a well-read, self-assured poet, with echoes of Berryman, Merwin, Durcan, and Baxter, complex sound structures, and a fine, vibrant lyricism, all the more singing for its innate grounding in observed reality and the effort to make real.

Turner’s resume includes customs officer, rabbiter, sawmiller, editor for Oxford University Press, and managing editor for John McIndoe. He has played hockey at the national level, batted in the senior cricket team, and climbed mountains, and he is still an accomplished race cyclist, fisherman, and sailor. In 1984, he was awarded the Burns Fellowship, and in 1997, he was awarded a literary fellowship from the University of Canterbury.

He was born in Dunedin, attended high school in Otago, and now makes his home in Oturehua, in Central Otago’s Ida Valley. Brian Turner attended the University of Otago as a Robert Burns Fellow in 1984. Beyond earning Turner the New Zealand Book Award for Poetry in 1993; the New Zealand Book Awards have since been renamed the Ockham New Zealand Book Awards. In 1997, Turner was chosen for the Ursula Bethell Residency in Creative Writing, which aims to promote New Zealand writing by giving a writer the chance to focus entirely on creative writing in a university setting.

Both the official history of rugby star Josh Kronfeld and the official biography of All Blacks icon Colin Meads is available through author Brian Turner. Lifting the Covers was written by him and his brother, Glenn Turner, a former New Zealand representative in cricket for Longacre Press in 1997.

Turner has contributed essays to a number of publications, including the critically acclaimed art book Timeless Land: reproductions of Paintings by Grahame Sydney and the monograph New Zealand Photographs: Scott Freeman, for which he wrote the lengthy introduction. In addition to his entry in the Oxford Companion to Literature, Oliver has written several works of creative nonfiction, such as Inside – with Anton Oliver, Into the Wider World: A Back Country Miscellany, and Boundaries: People and Places of Central Otago, which is a collection of poems, essays, and interviews about his hometown.

Brian Turner’s poetry is well-known for its quality. In the Poetry category of the 2002 Montana NZ Book Awards, now called the Ockham New Zealand Book Awards, Taking Off placed in the top three. The poems include topics such as being apart from loved ones, dealing with an aging parent, remembering friends who have passed away, and life in Central Otago.
