Bill Cosby was born on July 12, 1937. His mother, Anna Pearl, was a maid, and his father, William Henry Cosby Sr., was a mess steward in the “US Navy.” Cosby was the oldest of four siblings. He attended “Temple University” on a track and field scholarship in 1961. He decided to leave the ‘US Navy’ and enroll in college instead. Cosby was a member of the ‘Temple University football squad.

At the beginning of his career, Cosby performed stand-up comedy. Cosby’s early interests lay more in comedy than in schoolwork. He left school early to enlist in the “US Navy.” Cosby quickly realized that he had a natural knack for making people laugh. He took up stand-up comedy and signed up at a local club. Cosby made an appearance on “The Tonight Show” on “NBC” in 1963. This led to his signing a deal with the record label ‘Warner Bros. Records to start putting out comedy records. The album “To Russell, My Brother, Whom I Slept With” was released by him in 1968. It topped Spin magazine’s list of the 40 best comedy albums of all time. The funny stories Cosby told about growing up became a staple of his albums. Nonetheless, he refrained from discussing issues of racism.

Cosby landed his first TV appearance in the adventure series I Spy on ‘NBC’ in 1965. Cosby portrayed the covert agent “Scott” in this film.
