Bill Cosby was born on July 12, 1937. His mother, Anna Pearl, was a maid, and his father, William Henry Cosby Sr., was a mess steward in the “US Navy.” Cosby was the oldest of four siblings. To help out, he worked a couple of jobs on the side. Cosby was unable to pass his tenth-grade year at the fictional “Germantown High School,” so he dropped out.

Cosby enlisted in the “US Navy” in 1956 and spent several years there as a hospital corpsman. Cosby earned his GED through a correspondence course he took while serving in the Navy. He attended “Temple University” on a track and field scholarship in 1961. He decided to leave the ‘US Navy’ and enroll in college instead. Cosby was a member of the ‘Temple University football squad.

At the beginning of his career, Cosby performed stand-up comedy. Cosby’s early interests lay more in comedy than in schoolwork. He left school early to enlist in the “US Navy.” Cosby quickly realized that he had a natural knack for making people laugh. He took up stand-up comedy and signed up at a local club. His first acting job was on the TV series “I Spy.” He was quickly cast in several high-profile TV roles after the show’s success. His sitcom, “The Bill Cosby Show,” ranked among the most popular in the United States for many years.

Cosby made an appearance on “The Tonight Show” on “NBC” in 1963. This led to his signing a deal with the record label ‘Warner Bros. Records to start putting out comedy records. The album “To Russell, My Brother, Whom I Slept With” was released by him in 1968. It topped Spin magazine’s list of the 40 best comedy albums of all time. The funny stories Cosby told about growing up became a staple of his albums. Nonetheless, he refrained from discussing issues of racism.

Cosby landed his first TV appearance in the adventure series I Spy on ‘NBC’ in 1965. Cosby portrayed the covert agent “Scott” in this film. Cosby broke new ground by being the first Afro-American actor to land a leading role. Hence, the producers were originally worried about the show’s reception. Yet, it was a hit with audiences and continued for three more seasons. For three years in a row, Cosby was honored as the “Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series” Emmy Award winner.

The Bill Cosby Show, in which Cosby starred, ran for two seasons on NBC beginning in 1969. Cosby played a school PE teacher named “Chet Kincaid” on the sitcom.
