Andrea Levy Bio

Andrea Levy was born on March 7, 1956, to middle-class parents in Archway, London. Her ancestry was mostly Afro-Jamaican. She was raised in a council estate in Highbury, a neighborhood in north London. Highbury Hill Grammar School was where her education began. She went on to study weaving and textile design at Middlesex Polytechnic. The Royal Society of Literature inducted Levy as a Fellow that year.

The author got married to a guy named Bill Mayblin. They had a graphic design business together. After battling metastatic breast cancer for almost 15 years, Levy passed away on 14 February 2019. Age-wise, she was 62. The English novelist Andrea Levy passed away in 2012, yet her works “Little Island” and “The Long Song” remain bestsellers. Awards such as the Orange Prize for Fiction and the Commonwealth Writers’ Prize were given to her in celebration of both novels. She wrote extensively about issues facing British Jamaicans because she was born to Jamaican parents. Levy was born into a normal London working-class family in Archway.

She attended Highbury Hill Grammar School, located in a council area in north London, and then Middlesex Polytechnic, where she majored in textile design and weaving. After finishing college, Levy went straight into the costume industry as a costume assistant. By the age of 23, she had never read a book; it wasn’t until she was well into her 30s that she picked up a book and began to write. In 1994, she released her debut novel, “Every Light in the House Burnin,” to critical acclaim. Until her death in 2019 from metastatic breast cancer, Levy never stopped writing.

At the outset of her career, Andrea Levy worked as an assistant in the costume departments of the Royal Opera House and the BBC. At the same time, she launched a brand new graphic design studio. She debuted as a novelist in 1994 with her book “Every Light in the House Burnin,” which was met with critical acclaim. Her life as a young child in north London with her Jamaican migrant parents was the inspiration for this semi-autobiographical novel. The novel “Never Far from Nowhere” came out next.

As a result of her first trip to Jamaica, Levy was able to learn more about her family’s history, and she documented her findings in the book Fruit of the Lemon. The 1999 novel focused on the disparities between the descendants of Jamaican immigrants to Britain and the native-born population of Great Britain. Little Island, her fourth novel, followed. The novel was well-received for its examination of emigration in the years following World War Two. Among the accolades it received were the Orange Award for Fiction and the Whitbread Novel of the Year.

The critics also took notice of Levy’s final novel, The Long Song, which went on to win the 2011 Walter Scott Prize. It was called a “sensational novel” by “The Daily Telegraph” and was on the shortlist for the 2010 Man Booker Prize. Later, in December 2018, BBC One aired a three-part adaptation of The Long Song.

‘Six Tales and an Essay,’ Levy’s collection of short fiction, was released in 2014. The brief book was modeled after an autobiographical essay and featured tales culled from the author’s own life. Andrea Levy was born on March 7, 1956, in Archway, London, and she grew up in a council estate in Highbury. Winston Levy, the patriarch of the Levy family, arrived in London from Jamaica aboard the Empire Windrush in 1948. Soon after, Amy Levy, her mother, arrived. Her parents were among the many Caribbean people who arrived in Britain after World War II and came to be known as the Windrush Generation.

Levy said she had always assumed she was white. She didn’t fully embrace her blackness and Jamaican origin until she was well into her thirties. Levy was an artist at his core. In the middle of the 1970s, she attended Middlesex Polytechnic to study textile design. She eventually moved back to London, her birthplace, where she worked in the Royal Opera House’s and BBC’s costume shops. During this time, she began a graphic design business with her future husband, Bill Mayblin.

Black men were more likely to be stopped and searched by police after a string of riots broke out in the 1980s in neighborhoods with a large Caribbean population. Levy had to face who she was as a black British lady during this stressful time. Her company held a training to raise awareness about racism and encouraged employees to separate into white and black halves of the room. Levy sided with the privileged whites. She realized her race was an issue after what happened. Levy, ever the student, signed up for a night class in creative writing at City Lit College. Levy used her writing as a way to go deeper into her heritage as a black British woman and her sense of self.

Every Light in the House Burnin’, Levy’s debut novel, was released to the public that same year. This fictionalized account of a Windrush family in 1960s North London is based on the author’s own family history. Finding a publisher interested in the story proved challenging.

Never Far from Nowhere, her second novel came out in 1996. The story centers on two English sisters of Jamaican origin and is set in a council estate in the 1970s. Vivien’s light skin allows her to blend in more easily, while Olive’s darker skin makes her stand out. It made the longlist for the Orange Prize, given annually to an outstanding English-language novel by a female author.

Levy experienced a chasm between her upbringing and her Jamaican heritage. Levy made her first trip to Jamaica in 1998, fifty years after her father had initially landed in England on the Windrush. She was embraced warmly, and the family history was eagerly recounted to her. Fruit of the Lemon, her third novel, follows protagonist Faith Jackson as she travels to Jamaica in search of her ancestors. The book was awarded the Orange Award for Excellence.
